
SUGAR SNAP PEAS
A little about sugar snap peas..
In 1979, sugar snap peas were developed to create an edible-pod variety that was sweeter with larger peas. Green peas and snow peas were used to create the hybrid; sugar snap pea.
They were also specifically bred so the pods' fibers go in only one direction, easier to chew.

Sugar snap peas are part of the legume (a vegetable that contains pods) family.
Snap peas are pod fruits, which is an edible-podded pea. They do not contain a membrane and do not open once ripe.
The average length of a pea pod at maturity is around 4-8cm. Each pod contains anywhere between three to eight individual peas.
They grow best with a support system, trellis or way to climb and easier harvesting. Some varieties can climb 6-7ft high! Most commonly grow from 3-4ft high.
China is the top green pea producer in the world with over 55% of total production, followed by India with close to 30%.
Only about 5% of peas grown are sold fresh; most end up canned or frozen.
"Mangetout" means "eat all" in French, applying to snap peas and snow peas.
